Al Ain Distribution Company
The Middle East, and the UAE in particular, have experienced a tremendous boom in property and electrical power cables development over the last decade. In other cities, the underlying electrical power cables available to property developers typically mapped and documented well before the developer begins his work. A problem unique to developers in the region, however, is having no sure way to determine the existing electrical power cables laying beneath the surface. Understanding what lies beneath the surface is very important to ensure safe excavation does not interrupt or damage an existing piece of electrical power cables. Additionally, it allows developers to plan around critical electrical power cables requirements. But normally there has not been an easy and quick way to properly mapped and surveyed what electrical power cables is progressing beneath the surface across the city, especially where daily electrical power cables development (e.g. water pipes, power & communication cables) is very huge such as conducting new installations, replacements, diversions, reinforcement, etc.
However, Inventor at Al Ain Distribution Company (AADC) have found a solution to this problem. We devised a way to map underground electrical power cables by developing a mobile-laser scanning technique and algorithms for rectifying the satellite geographical locations for power electrical cables which leads to change a theories invented over 200 years.

Allama Iqbal Open University
Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is one of the leading distance education universities in the world. It is the first Open University in South Asia. AIOU provides multi-disciplinary education from basic to doctoral level programs to the masses at their door-steps. It is the largest University in the country offering more than 1200 courses and has an enrollment of about 1.4 million students approximately per annum. It has a network of more than 40 regional campuses with more than 1600 study centres all across the country. More than 60,000 tutors are appointed each year. The regional campuses are responsible for allocating tutor and study centre to each and every distant learner of their relevant district. Currently, major decisions of allocation were being made manually with nominal support of technology. The use of Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) will not only improve the decision quality and overall performance of distance learning system, but it will also provide relief to distance learners who face various kinds of problems relating to study centres, tutors and workshops. Many student problems arise because distant learners get tutors assigned which are not from their geographical area and study/workshop centres instead are remote from their locations. This research project helped in understanding these issues and SDSS will provide the decision makers with a solution to bring the learners and tutors closer to improve their communication, make access to study centres easier and ultimately improve the efficiency of the distance learning system.
It starts by designing and implementing a world-class GIS data model following the international standards set by Esri and the US government to enhance the Municipality’s business performance.The portal designed with Bilingual interface.
By creating a GIS-format basemap with data loading and automation using FME model automation ensures automatic and accurate database updates of collected data from different departments within Dibba’s Municipality and other governmental entities.
The system includes a Web GIS Viewer taking advantage of the latest web technologies, supported by Esri’s Portal for ArcGIS. This allows the system’s easy integration with multiple governmental entities for data exchange and analysis. The survey team will be equipped with mobile devices, utilizing Esri Collector for ArcGIS to perform online and offline field data collection.
Moreover, the GIS system geo-enables the Dibba Municipality e-services and allows for seamless integration between the two systems. This ensures automatic generation and certification of site plans and Milkiyat, utilizing the latest digital signature technologies.
Geodubai is an Initiative Launched by the GIS Centre - Dubai Municipality to Unify and Simplify the Procedures of City Planning and Development Within the Emirate of Dubai, the Initiative Aims to Collaborate the Efforts of the City Development Entities and the Utilities Entities in One Major Process to come Up With an Up-to-Date Base map for the Emirate of Dubai as Well as a Unified Geospatial 3D Map. The Initiative Adopts the Latest Technology Tools and Concepts in its Projects Including Machine Learning, 3D Drone, 360˚ Scanning Vehicle.
Environment Agency Abu Dhabi
The primary objective of Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) is to ensure a clean and healthy environment for the residents of Abu Dhabi. Accordingly, EAD has regular programs for monitoring the quality of marine water quality, air, groundwater, soils, wildlife, etc. The information collected through these monitoring programs are made available to all relevant stakeholders through portals.
EAD recently redeveloped its Marine Water Quality (MWQ) portal to be in line with the latest technologies, and incorporated advanced features required for efficiently managing all data related to EAD’s marine water quality monitoring programs, both field based surveys and automated buoys. As part of EAD’s efforts to unify all portals in an integrated manner on Enviroportal (enviroportal.ead.ae), the MWQ portal was developed as an extension on the Enviroportal. The portal includes advanced tools for data entry, validation, analysis and reporting. The portal has the ability to display real time information from buoys and the various marine water quality indexes to enable our stakeholders to make better-informed decisions.

Federal Competitiveness & Statistics Authority
In 2017, FCSA became the UAE’s National Secretariat for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), upon this FCSA initiated the implementation of tools that aids SDGs fulfillment. One of which is UAE SDG Data hub which is the first SDG Data Hub to be successfully launched in the region as part of the UN Federated System for the SDGs. The hub is built on Esri Platform and takes advantage of the web GIS principles allowing us to connect data from multiple sources and organizations without having to re-implement or import data content. Moreover through the data hub, UAE started reporting the achievement on indicators to UN Global data hub seamlessly to become the 2nd country worldwide to synchronize with UN global hub which is also built on ArcGIS platform.
SDGs agenda encourages national and international organizations to partner with the civil society as SDGs will not be achieved without significant public awareness. Thus, a context for UAE SDG related governmental initiatives was added on UAE data hub using ArcGIS hub with some sample initiatives where every initiative was implemented on a site template designed and customized to educate visitors about it aiming to:
General Authority for Statistics
One of the main components of any national statistical system is the availability of a unified and up-to-date geospatial database at the country level according to international standards which can be used in all statistical work, whether censuses, research or studies. Therefore, it was necessary to build and develop a unified, accurate and up-to-date geospatial database according to international standards covering all parts of Saudi Arabia (cities or countryside) that its accuracy reaches the level of the plot so that each plot of land has a unique and distinctive number at the level of Saudi Arabia and is linked to the administrative structure in Saudi Arabia (Administrative region, governorate, administrative center, city and populated area). This database can be used in all stages of statistical work, including censuses (preparation stage and pre- enumeration stage, enumeration stage and dissemination stage post enumeration) and field research. This database also can be used in different forms whether on tablets, on the internet or on office systems used in the distribution of census's labour force and in the follow up of all field work. The National Address method has been adopted by the Saudi Post through a partnership between the two entities to form one of the information layers in the geospatial database which the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) is building and developing within the GIS environment to serve the purposes of the 2020 census.
GIS was selected to resolve this problem and enable Haya Water to efficiently monitor the status of road instatements being carried out by various contractors who are building the Haya Water sewerage network, in various areas of Muscat. The application will be accessed by authorized project staff and management within the Haya Water intranet and via secure login’s by select Haya project and contractor staff using mobile devices via the internet. The key functionality of this road reinstatement application to show change of status, time monitoring, issue e-mail notifications in case of delays, inspector approvals of the reinstatement by location, generate custom reports for project staff monitoring the projects and provide a high level operations dashboards for Haya management.

Benayat Building Permit Portal is the Kingdom of Bahrain’s official system used to issue building permits for all types of building projects whether Investment, Residential, Industrial, Commercial, etc. The system enables Engineering Offices licensed in the Kingdom of Bahrain to apply for building permits, inquire on application status, obtain consultation from concerned government entities regarding building permits, pay building permit related fees, as well as apply for other building related services. By utilizing an interactive map that provides key information for land parcels and by centralizing all the concerned regulations and requirements under one system, Benayat allows applicants to obtain all necessary information to prepare drawings and documents required to apply for a building permit.
Modon GeoPortal provides a complete integrated platform that integrates geographic information from different departments via Internet and intranet.In terms of managing its strategic geo information and accessing the GIS data by using a web application. And to develop an electronic platform that will allow access to several map centric applications that will enhance communication between the IT Department / GIS Section and various departments within MODON. This will allow the accuracy, readiness, and availability of the information to other beneficiaries within the organization. In addition to that, the platform will provide an executive dashboard to monitor key performance indices.
Modon GeoPortal provides MODON with a platform for managing all of its geospatial content. It allows for both secure and private sharing within Modon users in public domain and supports all of mobile, server, and desktop clients. It grants Modon end-users access to useful online GIS applications, maps, and geographic data.
Municipality & Planning Department - Ajman
Ajman BIM&3D project aim to enhance the process, services and the decisions made by the municipality. Through the integration of architectural data and processes from the building department with the data and processes of GIS department.
Moreover, it aims to establish a database that integrates building and geographical systems that will allow geo-analysis to improve the efficiency of the engineering plans received from consultants.
The project outputs will enhance the decision-making process for developing the overall city projects, urban and infrastructure and safety measures.
The project was launched to simplify, expedite and to provide a single interface for Nakheel users to serve its customers. The in-silo GIS application was integrated with Oracle Property Manager, Document Management system, Workflow approval system, DocuSign and Nakheel Online Services. The project digitized more than 80 Nakheel customer services through web application with complete back end automations.
GIS is the central and core part of the ecosystem which communicates to all systems , Nakheel system users use a single screen to interact with more than eight systems, this has reduced the customer services window by 45%
ArcGIS Enterprise software system deployed to production on premises in Expec Computer Center (ECC), Saudi Aramco to facilitate more integrated and collaborative GIS environment among all upstream members of the organization, so that they easily access and use geographic information leading to intelligent decision making. All the spatial data is stored in oracle based geodatabse with integrated oracle security enabled, and non-spatial data is stored in company’s corporate oracle based database. Around 1500 upstream users benefiting from the system in order to enhance their GIS related workflows like creating maps, services, and apps, performing spatial analysis, and share and collaborate with other users within the team or outside, all by themselves without the need of GIS Experts using ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Pro. Field geologists are using Collector for ArcGIS to collect data from the field and integrate the collected data with corporate database in the office. Insights for ArcGIS is being used to create analytical and exploratory dashboards to understand data, deduce knowledge, and communicate KPIs with the management. Various operation dashboards have been created to provide the view of different operations using Operations Dashboard. The system also integrates GIS with other business systems and G&G applications like Petrel and Decision Space, and promotes cross-organizational collaboration. Furthermore, the system has been transformed to a stable platform by incorporating redundant hardware to cater the single point of failure by deploying to production on 14 Linux servers, 2 Windows server, and 4 load balancers for high availability. With this, users and integrating applications will not observe down time, thus increasing the availability and usability of the system. Consequently, apart from various other applications, four of our in-house developed applications using Web AppsBuilder for ArcGIS, such as Geoknowledge, EGIS, WebGDC, and Groundwater Monitoring have become highly available. Sharjah Electricity & Water Authority
The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA), based on the directives of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohamed Al-Qassimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah; and under the leadership of H.E. Dr. Rashed Al-Leem, is executing a major strategic plan for improving the services it provides to the citizens and residents in Sharjah, enhancing the performance of its departments and supporting the development and prosperity of the Emirate of Sharjah.
SEWA is relying heavily on GIS on its improvement journey. GIS products, applications, e-services and geospatial data are crucial elements that should play a major role in transforming SEWA services at the operational, tactical and strategic levels.
E-services section of ITS Department, Sharjah Municipality took an initiative and with support and directions from the senior management and moved on to expand its GIS capabilities to bring it closer to a true enterprise GIS.
In the process of moving to next level of Enterprise GIS two more departments of Sharjah Municipality, 1. Public Parking Dept.(PPD) and 2. Rent Regulation Dept.(RRD) have been introduced to the power and advantages of GIS.
Both departments are important, having critical data and are directly part of the revenue source of Sharjah Municipality. Both departments directly cater to the public comfort and wellbeing. Good and efficient GIS for these departments helped them skillfully deal with their data for very useful analysis and decision making for future development. Browser based GIS applications was developed, which geospatially pin points the critical situations and make identification of desired points of interest much simpler. The Dash Board applications are great tools to find quickly see all data analyzed on one screen and helps great deal in making strategic decisions.
The whole setup is based on a robust overall system with good basic infrastructure to support it. The technology used is latest and is at par with the international standards and the developed applications are scalable to undertake new requirements.
Together these applications give a very clear picture of the demographic landscape of Sharjah which is quite diversified and Sharjah Municipality is dedicated to spreading the virtue of tolerance all around the emirate.
The Bahrain Field has been producing since 1932 and over the years, it has become increasingly complex to produce due to oil and gas infrastructure congestion. This infrastructure continues to grow as the Bahrain Field development activities increase. It has become challenging to trace the behavior of wells, their associated infrastructure, and technological advancements, producing gigabytes of information. Many types of sensors are installed on different wells which transmit real-time data through wireless channels (antennas), stored and organized in a real-time data management system. This real–time data is integrated with our Tatweer Petroleum’s Spatial Data Infrastructure (TSDI) model which plays an important role in building our GIS System.
Advanced surveying technologies along with Drones are being used for surveying and mapping the Bahrain Field and for surveillance and security purposes.
At Tatweer Petroleum, all our business applications are integrated, and databases are stored and updated on a daily basis in the Operational Database Storage in order to centralize all operations data in one location. These applications and data are integrated within GIS through the Feature Manipulation Engine desktop and server. Tatweer Petroleum uses a Business Process Management solution to build business processes and workflows. Permit to Work registration process, leaks and clamps, road traffic incidents, and tie-in reservations and such processes are integrated with the GIS system. Enterprise GIS architecture enables us to build tailor-made applications to meet different departmental needs, and to support the users with their day-to-day operations through secured auto-login GIS web based applications.
United Arab Emirates University
This project addresses the main criteria specified by EGI, first, Clear business objectives: The main objective of the GIS Program at the Department of Geography and Urban Planning is to train graduates who can serve the nation in the geospatial filed. Investment in human capital is one of the founding President Sheikh Zayed primary objectives. The GIS program passed through continuous evaluation by external Reviewers. The latest (2020) is the accreditation by the UAE Ministry of Education - Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA). Second, System infrastructure: The department has 4 GIS/Remote sensing labs for undergraduate students and one lab for Master and PhD students with total of 112 PCs.Third, Productivity, scalability, and user satisfaction: The Department was established in 1977. In 1999 a GIS track was started, in 2005 a joint Master Program of Remote Sensing and GIS was established followed by PhD program in 2014.The Department produced more than 1500 graduates since its establishment. Students as well as government departments had shown their satisfaction with the role of the Department as the main source of geospatial human resources for the country. Fourth, Usage of the latest technology (high tech): The hardware and software at the 5 GIS/Remote sensing Labs are upgraded continuously. This includes ArcGIS, ERDAS, ENVI, and SPSS. The Department is utilizing Cloud computing and BlockChain technology to facilitate access to its software and Geospatial data by students and faculty whenever and wherever.
